AMI-player wins award for audio description achievement

Accessible Media Inc. (AMI) announced today that the AMI-player has been recognized with an audio description achievement award from the American Council of the Blind.

AMI is the recipient of the 2015 Dr. Margaret R. Pfanstiehl Memorial Achievement Award for Research and Development for the creation and launch of the AMI-player, an initiative that contributes to the advancement of audio description (described video).

“We are absolutely honoured to receive this prestigious award from the American Council of the Blind,” says David Errington, President and CEO of AMI. “The AMI-player is something that we are extremely proud of and more importantly, is a tool that truly expands the boundaries of traditional media for the blind and partially sighted community.”

The AMI-player was introduced in October 2014 as the first accessible online media player in North America, making AMI’s original content available to the audience in an on-demand format. The AMI-player is built to be structurally accessible and designed to function with a variety of assistive technologies. The AMI-player was developed by Simply Accessible on behalf of AMI using technology from thePlatform’s Player Development Kit. Simply Accessible also assisted in validating all accessibility features and 2toLead helped integrate the solution to AMI’s website.

Since 2009 the American Council of the Blind has been recognizing individuals and organizations for their contributions to the field through the Audio Description Project. Awards are handed out annually to American and International recipients in a variety of fields including media, performing arts, career achievement, and more. AMI previously won the Achievement in Audio Description – International award in 2013 for the creation and development of the Described Video (DV) Guide.
