Employable Me expert has a message for employers: be patient

A man sits at a desk, writing on a piece of paper with a pen.

Dr. Andrew Shaul has one word of advice for employers looking to hire Canadians of all abilities: patience.

"Some people may not make a great first impression, perhaps because they're nervous," Dr. Shaul says. "Be patient if the person doesn't present well at the beginning. That doesn't mean that they aren't capable. Have the patience to get to know someone." Dr. Shaul is one of several experts and community partners who participate in Season three of Employable Me, helping 12 job seekers of all abilities prepare, interview for and—fingers crossed—land a job.

Located in Toronto, Andrew Shaul Psychology Professional Corporation is an association of registered psychologists, registered psychotherapists, social workers and mental health providers who are committed to meeting the needs of a large and diverse clientele in a supportive environment. Among their services are the psychological assessment and treatment of children, adolescents and adults.

Dr. Shaul explains that, during production of Employable Me he met with job seekers Jordan (pictured above) and Daniel R. In their meetings, Dr. Shaul determined cognitive strengths, interests and challenges—a snapshot of abilities—before determining what employment would be a good match for their abilities and interests.

"Jordan's interest in trains was profound," Dr. Shaul recalls. "Not just his interest, but his unbelievable knowledge. He was like an encyclopedia ... so it was a natural to get the job that he got."
