Jillian Gillis previews Over the Edge
By Jillian Gillis
When AMI asked if I would be interested in rappelling from the roof of The Westin Nova Scotian hotel for the CNIB NS fundraiser Over the Edge, I was both apprehensive and excited. Even though I was unsure how I would handle the situation, I was eager to take on the challenge.
This event was the first of its kind for CNIB NS, and they asked AMI to be the media sponsor. My role was to repel 13 storeys and report on the day-long events. Jennie Bovard, a member of the AMI family and host of the AMI podcast Low Vision Moments was the MC for the event. Jennie and I were some of the first to go over the edge, so we were able to bond over our collective anxiousness together.
Once on the roof, that’s when the fear really started to set in. I was thinking, “Am I really going to do this??” There was a bunch of safety gear, and the riggers were all very reassuring. They told us that if we had driven in a car to get to the event, then we had already done the most dangerous thing we would do that day and that the ropes could hold a tractor-trailer. Still, my mind was racing, which made it hard to take in their reassurances.
Standing on the ledge of the building, I refused to look down. My legs felt weak. Leaning back over the edge was probably the trickiest and most frightening part; it took me some time to trust the ropes. It literally felt like I was defying every instinct in me. Adrenaline pumping through me, I rappelled down the side of the building, mostly avoiding looking down. Although at one point, I did take a few good looks around at the stunning view of the Halifax Harbour and Georges Island, most of my focus was on getting back on the ground. I was glad when I made it to the bottom.
I also got the chance to catch up with Shelley Adams, manager of community engagement for CNIB NS and organizer of the event. She filled me in on the event’s success and how the fundraiser will help the CNIB.
I had never done anything like this before, I’m so happy I had this opportunity and I’m extremely proud of myself for facing such a big fear! What an incredible experience.
Watch me go “over the edge” by tuning into AMI This Week on Monday, November 1, at 8 p.m. Eastern on AMI-tv.
